— Michael Gathman, CEO of Community Bankers of Iowa
People can’t stay in their roles forever, which raises a question every bank will eventually face: who steps up next? Succession planning isn’t a challenge unique to banks. It’s something every organization has to answer sooner or later.
This year, we’re seeing that next chapter take shape, and there’s a lot to be excited about. We’re welcoming several new members to our board of directors. You’ll get to know each of them on page 8, but these individuals are exactly why change and succession planning matter so much.
Change brings new perspectives, new energy, and a board that continues to reflect the communities we serve.
The name you’ll hear first is Jeremy Bunkers, our new board president.
Jeremy is CEO of American Bank, serving LeMars, Remsen, Marcus, and the surrounding communities. Banking wasn’t always the plan. After years of long weeks at a poultry plant, he took a teller job at the bank he already used, and the industry stuck. From there, he worked his way up through ag and commercial lending and branch management before becoming CEO in 2019, the same year he joined CBI’s board.
Jeremy is no stranger to our organization, and his path from teller to CEO gives him a clear view of what community bankers actually need from us.
During his term, he’ll focus on practicality: deepening member engagement, giving members tools they can actually use, and making sure everyone knows about the resources CBI already offers.
One of your first chances to connect with Jeremy in his new role, and with bankers from across the state, will be this October at our conference. Our two signature events are joining forces for one impactful two-day experience: the Executive Management Conference and Young Bankers of Iowa Innovation Conference, October 15–16 at the Hyatt Regency Iowa River Landing in Coralville.
Expect a strong lineup of speakers and breakout sessions open to both groups, plus plenty of time to connect with people who understand exactly what you’re working through.
Registration is open. Find all the details starting on page 16.
There’s a lot of change happening, and I’m excited about where it’s taking us. We have new voices on our board, new leadership, and a lot of energy behind the work we’re doing together. I can’t wait for you to be part of what’s next.
